1. Get your curls to stay: cool them down

One of the most effective tricks on how to get your curls to stay is to let the curl cool down and set before letting it go. Take each fresh curl (still keeping the curl shape) and secure it with a clip or a bobby pin. How does this work? Well, as you wrap your hair around the curling iron, heat is transferred onto the hair strands, which is what makes them change their shape. So once your pinned curl is cooled down, it will allow the cuticle to close and set in place, making the curl last for a much longer period of time.

Hint: If you don’t have time to wait 10-15 minutes for the curls to set, pin them all to your scalp and use your blow drier to blow cold air on them from a distance. Ever wondered what that ‘cool’ button was there for? 😉

2. Use the right hair products

Help your curls! Apply styling products to your hair, which will help hold the curls in longer. Depending what works with your hair, apply a tiny bit of mousse prior to drying your hair, or simply spray hairspray before and after curling. All this is after applying heat protectant, of course – always remember the heat protectant first!

Hint: Don’t hold the hairspray too close to your hair. You want to spray mist onto it, and wait a few moments for it to dry prior to applying heat.

3. Invest in good hot hair tools

For years, you may think that your hair is ‘stick straight’ and that ‘your curls will fall apart in 20 minutes anyway’. You will think that as long as you use cheap, drugstore brand curlers. Only when you switch to better quality, higher-end tools, will you realize that the problem isn’t in your hair – it’s in the iron! Yes, they may be more expensive, however, they damage your hair less, they heat up better (so you will apply heat for a shorter period of time), and good quality irons will last you a very long time.

4. Use the right barrel size

It’s easy to think that a bigger barrel is what will give you those sexy Victoria Secret Curls. However, we find that most of the time, a smaller barrel will do the magic. Depending on your hair, of course, try using a 1″ or 1.5″ barrel, and see what difference it can make! Not only will the curls look better, but they will also last longer.

5. Your hair still doesn’t curl?

Well, my beautiful friend, this is a sign that your hair is screaming SOS. Overly damaged hair (including split ends) doesn’t curl well. Period. Can I blame it on the robe?  Or maybe it’s the hydraulic chair.  But something about sitting in a hair salon deactivates my inquisitive-reporter skills, and makes my familiarity with hair vocabulary fly out the window.

Things get worse once the stylist starts making suggestions—typically proposing ways to remove some of the weight from my fine but very thick straight hair. Instead of speaking up, I nod in agreement, disregarding my knowledge of what works on my hair—or doesn’t. A decade ago, I let a stylist cut wispy bangs, knowing my cowlick would never cooperate. And when I do make requests, I’m often not specific enough. On several occasions, I’ve asked for “long layers,” only to walk away with the dreaded “Rachel,” long past its ’90s heyday.

Ms. Blackwell, a 30-year-old publicist, has found herself flustered, too. “I can picture the cut in my head.  I know the terms, but it never comes out right,” she said.  She now brings in her iPad with several pictures of a single celebrity to show her stylist of 2½ years the haircut from multiple angles.  Her inspiration of late is Gwyneth Paltrow’s long bob circa 2009.

Even a stylist you see regularly can get it wrong. On a recent trip to the salon, she left her photos at home. Instead, she showed her stylist an old picture on the small screen of her iPhone, asking for her original style.  She walked out with a cut much shorter than she expected. “I feel like it wasn’t my fault,” she said.

As much as we would like to remain blameless, communication is a two-way street.  There are things you can do to better explain your needs.  For starters, be honest when answering a stylist’s questions, especially about the kind of daily maintenance you’re prepared to undertake.  It may save you embarrassment, she added, “but you’re also not telling them the whole truth.”

Honesty with yourself is the best policy, too.  You may aspire to spend 45 minutes adding waves to your straight hair each morning, but is that realistic?  If your stylist doesn’t ask, offer the information up.

When talking about the cut—or color—you seek, a picture can be worth the proverbial thousand words.  “A lot of clients say one thing, but they don’t understand what they’re saying,”  With a photo, “I get an idea of where they want to go—and whether it’s realistic for them.”  Adjust your expectations.  The star with the hair of your dreams likely had a few people spending hours perfecting it.

The picture isn’t by any means a flawless way to communicate, especially if you pick an unrealistic shot.  Look for a celebrity with a hair color and texture that seems similar to your own.  Even the professionally beautiful take this approach.  When model Karlie Kloss was ready to cut off her hair, she began with some pictures to show her stylist.  “I brought in a bunch of photos before we pulled the scissors out,” Ms. Kloss said.  Her starting point: ’60s model Jean Shrimpton’s long, side-swept bangs.  The stylist then took it shorter, resulting in the style now known as the Karlie Chop.

Another option is to bring in a picture of yourself when your hair was at its best, said Kristine Barone, Master Hair Colorist near Glendale, Arizona .  It gives clients the chance to say, “this is what works for me,” said Mrs. Barone. The show-not-tell approach is also advisable for communicating length.  What you picture as an inch might really be a half an inch or an inch-and-a-half.  It’s better to use your hands to mark the desired length.

Kristine also studies a client’s body language for hints on how ready for change she may be.  Someone who touches her hair repeatedly while talking is likely quite attached to her locks, so she treads carefully.  She then peppers her guest with questions about her hair and her daily routine, listening carefully for cues and hints.  If she maintains a regular exercise habit, she might need her hair long enough to be pulled off her face.

Ultimately, there is a time when relinquishing control to the experts makes sense.  “People who come to me, they trust me,” said Kristine Barone.  For Mrs. Barone, too much talking interferes with the creative process. “I just know,” she said. “That’s why I’m hired.”

3. You want “wash and go” hair?  Me Too!

The truth is, very few people on this planet have wash and go hair. Many people look like they do (like the girl you work with whose hair is perfect all day long), but they have to work at it. They experiment with the right shampoo, get regular haircuts, try out new styling techniques, and they probably use product in their hair. By the way, we all secretly hate the girl with the perfect all day hair. It’s okay.

4. Not a fan of using hair products?

If you don’t want to use product in your hair, don’t expect your hair to look like you did. Have you ever noticed how many products your stylist uses during your haircut/blowout? Bottom line: new products are awesome and could give you a brand new appreciation for your hair.

5. Please use as directed!

Just because you’re using product, doesn’t mean you’re using it right. If you’re one of those girls that have been using the same product you used 10 years ago (it’s okay, you don’t have to admit it out loud), it is time for a change. Ask for advice on your hair products, and implement that advice at home. If your product isn’t working out, ask to exchange your product for something that will work for you.

6. Change is good, embrace change!

If you ask for a new look, but style your hair the same way you always have, you will likely not be happy with your hair’s result. In fact, it will probably look like it always did. A haircut is simply the foundation to a great look. Styling is key. Ask your stylist for advice on properly styling your new cut.

7. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

Practice makes perfect. Try new things with your hair and re-try them when you don’t get it right the first time. Trust me, even hairstylist have a hard time blowing out their own hair, and it takes some skill to learn to curl your hair with a flat iron. Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither is great hair.

8. Only Dream when you are asleep!

Have real expectations with your hair. If you’re only willing to put 5 minutes of styling into a hair style that should require 30 minutes, expect your hair to look that way. Ask your stylist to help you choose a look that matches the level of effort that you’re willing to put in and that matches your hair’s texture.

9. The long and short of it

The more hair you have, the more time it will take to style. Which is a real drag if you were “blessed” with ridiculously thick hair, but it’s just a truth that you have to accept.

10. Speaking of Acceptance

A salon chair is not a time machine. Hair changes over time as we age, just like our skin and our rear ends. It sucks, but we can only realistically work with the present condition of your hair. As much as you’d love to have your hair look the way it did 15 or 20 years ago, you will be much happier if you work with what you have, at the present moment, instead of focusing on what you once had.

11. Your Hair Stylist is not happy, if you are not happy!

Your hairstylist sincerely wants you to look good and feel good about your hair. You represent her talent, experience, skill, and her good name. We honestly stress about your hair, and we want you to feel good about it. We want you to love it, to tell your friends about it, and to come back in six weeks with enthusiasm about it. If you don’t love it, talk to your stylist about it. And if you do love it, tell her about that, too.

It’s easy!!!

1. Curl your hair in lose curls, let curls cool down (that will help the curls set and last longer) ,

2. When hair is cool “finger comb” your hair into a low to the back side loose pony tail. Not to tight, you definitely do not want a headache during your evening event.

3. Take a few bobby pins and pin the loose curls around the band. If your hair is long or heavy, you may want to criss/cross the bobby pins to secure curls in place.

4. Lastly take your favorite antique rhinestone broach, a pair of crystal earrings, or add a piece of sequins to the chignon.
