Newlywed Natalie Portman made headline hair news over the weekend when the normally brunette beauty, 31, debuted sunny blonde hair at the Van Cleef & Arpels Dinner for L.A. Dance Project on Saturday.

The Oscar-winning actress — who hung out with husband Benjamin Millepied and Robert Pattinson at the bash — told fellow revelers that the startling-but-stunning new look is for a film role, although she didn’t elaborate.

“Natalie makes a beautiful blonde!” Cunningham tells Us Weekly. “She needed to make the change for an upcoming movie role, and we achieved a gorgeous, multi-dimensional golden blonde.”

Move over, Blondes. Brunettes are taking center stage this season, says color Spokesperson Beth Minardi.  A celeb currently in the spotlight (for her gorgeous hair—not her recent tabloid pics) is Kate, Duchess of Cambridge. The princess positively glows, and that’s likely attributed to her glimmering brunette hue. “Her dark hair is lit through with tiny glimmers of golden light,” says Beth.“

To re-create the Duchess’ shade, lift the highlights to a soft gold.  In this instance, avoid lifting the base—it’s not necessary and you will avoid the risk of revealing unwanted warmth. To maintain lush, shiny condition like Kate’s, Beth recommends shampooing and conditioning with a nourishing wash and after-wash for lightened hair.

Kristine Barone of Kristine Barone’s Hair Design inside Salon Blissful (formerly J Salon) says the ponytail is back…and it is better than ever! You can reach Kristine at 602-323-6881 for a consultation or appointment.

It is becoming a go-to style for the fashion elite—for instance John Barrett recently opened Barrett’s Ponytail Bar in his chic New York salon, and if we learned one thing at Spring/Summer 2013 Fashion Week, it’s that the trendy-again style will be sticking around for a while.

On the runways, hairdressers got creative and updated the basic pony in myriad ways—high, low, textured, neat, shiny, matte—so there was literally a pony for every fashion personality. At Marc Jacobs, Redken Creative Consultant Guido created an Edie-Sedgwick 1960s-inspired pony with a teased, tousled finish. “This is a styled-then-slept-in look,” he says. “The height around the face is enough to highlight the features, but is not over-the-top.”

“Ombré isn’t going anywhere,” says Kristine Barone and Joico Guest Artist Cherry Petebrink (aka the colorist behind The Hunger Games). “It’s just taking a new, refreshing direction for fall and winter 2012 into spring 2013.”

Instead of the dramatic dark-to-light transition of past seasons, the new ombré is a rich, velvety look with a super-subtle transition in color for a look Cherry calls “balancing act”—Mila Kunis’ color is the perfect example.
